Notes: Created during the Civil War/War for Southern Independence from Arlington House Mansion and the surrounding 1,100 acre plantation, the home of Robert E. Lee, husband of the daughter of President George Washington's adopted son.

In 1862, the federal government seized the property for a tax default of $92.07 ($1,958.00 in 2007) when Mary Ann Randolph Custis Lee attempted to pay the tax through intermediaries, but did not pay the tax default in person. Burials began shortly before Jun 15 1864. By the end of 1864, seven thousand Union soldiers were interred on the plantation, the graves indicated with crude wooden markers. Soon vaults were added. One of the first contained the remains of 1,800 dead from the Battle of Bull Run.

Later a large grave containing the remains of 2,111 unknown soldiers from the War was added. In the 1880's, Lee descendent Custis Lee was awarded return of the property by the U.S. Supreme Court and demanded that all graves be disinterred from Arlington. The federal government, faced with the expense of moving 16,000 graves, purchased the property from Custis Lee for $150,000, ensuring that Arlington would be a permanent National Cemetery.

Today more than 260,000 Americans are buried in its 612 acres - the famous and the anonymous, generals and privates, presidents and politicians. Still overlooking the cemetery is the Arlington House Mansion completely restored and open daily for public visitation.
